There are achievements in sports and there are milestones. On a hot, humid morning, in the Southern Yucatan Mexico, earlier this year, Keenan Adams set a turkey hunting milestone. The 9-year old Bainbridge, Georgia resident, traveled along with his Father and Uncle to the Southern Peninsula of Mexico, known as the Yucatan. In the state of Campeche, Keenan searched for it's native bird, the Occellated Turkey. Keenan has been on hundreds of turkey hunts, but this was not to be one of his ordinary hunting trips. This was his chance to join a very exclusive club in the hunting circle and to make turkey hunting history. There are six species of wild turkeys in the world which are native to North America. Keenan became the youngest person ever to bag all six turkey species on April 7, 2003. It takes a special breed of hunter who goes after the "World Slam". It is not your every day hunter. Wild turkeys are not really like hunting anything else; wild turkeys have such good eyesight and hearing that you cannot make a mistake or you will lose him. Keenan does not stalk his prey; he sits in the woods thirty minutes before twilight, wrapped head to toe in camouflage, waiting the turkey out. He uses elaborate calls to lure the turkeys into shooting range, which is about forty yards. This is a test of wills between turkey and man. One crunch of the bush can spook the turkey into flight. There are many obstacles in the wait such as mosquitoes, ants, heat and high winds to name a few. Keenan often states that "It takes more than patience to take a turkey, it takes precision". Keenan began the sport of turkey hunting about six years ago. At the young age of 9
he has achieved Keenan's experience has taught him that hunting turkeys is about the same wherever you go. The six breeds of turkeys respond to slightly different calls, but it would take a wildlife expert to distinguish between them. As if turkey hunting throughout North America was not exciting enough, the vibrant and ever changing scenery, very well might be enough to keep you on the trail for Wild Turkeys.
